Course Overview:

This course will provide the learner with an overview of the ways disaster can impact an individual and household’s finances and economic recovery.  The learner will review case studies of recent disasters where an individual and household’s finances were impacted and analyze the lessons learned from these events.  An overview of emergency planning will also be provided.  The course will present best practices in pre-disaster financial planning to include identifying and engaging essential partners.  Finally, an overview of available resources, toolkits, and checklists will be presented.  

Scope:

This awareness-level course will provide the learner with an overview of business financial literacy and the need for pre-disaster planning.  The participants will be provided with case studies to highlight the concepts provided in the course.  They will also receive a high-level overview of planning for financial aspects of disasters. 

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to successfully complete post-course questions based on the following tasks:

 

  1. Identify the kinds of financial disasters that can affect an individual/ household;
  2. Recognize the key elements of individual/ household financial literacy;
  3. Identify the public (government) and non-governmental programs that can assist in financial disaster preparedness for individuals/ households;
  4. Re-state initial steps towards strengthening individual/ household/ financial preparedness for disasters.
